Habits: swears all the time, and bites her lip when nervous
Secrets: Along with her heavy drinking and depression, Alaska also goes through stages of starving herself.
Overall Personality: On the surface, Alaska Greene is the life and the soul of the party. She's bubbly, bright and seemingly content with her life. Although she opted not to attend college after she graduated from the local high school, she has a steady job as a journalist and photographer for the local newspaper, and even gets freelance work for bigger magazines and websites.
In reality though, Alaska has real issues. A secret heavy drinking problem and deep depression cause her to starve herself thin to try and maintain some control over her life. Severe trust issues cause her to refuse to let anyone in; that is, except men. She falls in love quickly and intensely, and always for the wrong person. Her relationships are generally short, volatile and abusive.
Alaska's biggest fear is the history of mental illness on the maternal side of her family. She tries to stay away from the asylum in town, as when she was younger her mother used to threaten to leave her there for the 'evil morticians' to have their way with her. This was, of course, a vicious lie from a vicious woman, but one that gave Alaska a very real phobia.
She loves her Daddy and big brother Carter, and mourns the death of her younger sister Aria three years ago. Her mother had committed suicide by driving her car off a cliff, with Aria inside.
Since then, Alaska has been terrified of losing what remains of her family, and is probably the reason she finds it hard to get close to people. She lies compulsively, something which isn't in her control. She often finds lies spilling out of her mouth before she can even think about it.
She cares greatly about her public image, and tries to create the illusion of the girl who has it all. This, to Alaska, is a sort of shield she can hide behind, so people can adore her without having to know about her problems.
Mother: Aubrey Emma Greene (nee Lee)
Father: David Elliot Greene
Siblings: Carter David Greene, Aria Grace Greene (deceased)
Other: n/a
Pets: A black cat, named Birdy
Overall History: Alaska Hope Greene was born to the happily married David and Aubrey Greene in 1993. Her mother had been a florist before the birth of her eldest son Carter, and David remained the main breadwinner as a lawyer. Coming from a seemingly respectable family, Alaska should have had it all. Sadly though, her mother suffered with post-natal depression after Alaska's birth, and their relationship never recovered.
Alaska never had much of a relationship with her mother, but had a strong relationship with her father, who doted on his eldest daughter. Her brother Carter, who was five years older than her, became her best friend; a bond that remains unbroken to the present day.
Her childhood was mostly happy, but her mother was continually nasty and cruel to her daughter. Alaska learned to stay out of her mothers way, mostly staying in her room writing fantasy stories as a way of escape.
When she was ten, her parents had another child, her younger sister Aria. Alaska was overjoyed with the new arrival and adored her little sister.
School was a blur of parties, drinking and exams for Alaska, right from freshman year. She fell in with a bad crowd, got drunk a lot, and this caused her relationship with her father to break down. She became depressed and started drinking every day, usually on her own.
Her first boyfriend, Ryan, came in Sophomore year, and he was four years older than her. Of course her family didn't approve - Ryan had a reputation around town as a bad guy, not the type a respectable lawyers daughter should be dating. Her family's disapproval only fueled her passion though, despite Ryan's constant put downs and their often violent arguments. They broke up after six months, to date the longest any of Alaska's relationships have lasted.
She developed an interest in photography in her junior year of high school, often skipping lessons to pursue this. It was also this year that Alaska came clean to her father about her mothers abuse, after he had found her passed out in the street drunk one night. He had filed for divorce, and two months later, her mother drove her car off a cliff, killing both herself and Aria. As a result, Alaska had always blamed herself for Aria's death. If she hadn't of told, her mother wouldn't have been driven to suicide. It was this year she began staring herself, and despite initial concern by her father and teachers, it mostly went unnoticed.
She graduated with decent grades, but not as well as she could have done, and moved into her own apartment as soon as she could. She got a job with the local paper to pay the bills, and her freelance work substantiated her income enough for her to be comfortable.
She keeps to herself mostly, but frequents the towns bars pretty much every night. She hasn't been in a relationship for a while now, and just wants some security for herself. She visits her father every other day, and her brother often sleeps on her couch.
behind the character
</div>Alaska sighed. Outside her apartment, the rain was pounding on the sidewalk, and she had no desire to go outside. The remainder of this mornings hangover still clung to her, her headache lingering despite the aspirin she had taken. She took her phone out of her bag and dialed in a familiar number.
"Hey, Carter. Wanna give me a lift to Dad's?" She asked as soon as the call connected. She heard her brother yawn. It was three in the afternoon, he couldn't still be in bed, could he?
"Aly, it's Wednesday." He answered. Damn. She had forgotten her brother worked the night shift on a Tuesday. He was probably exhausted.
"Sorry. I totally forgot. Don't worry, I'll grab a cab." She hung up and checked her purse. She didn't get paid for another three days, and there was no way she could afford a cab all the way across town. She grabbed an umbrella, stepped out of the apartment, and locked up. She hated the rain, and dear lord it was going to mess up her hair. She checked her bag again, and was glad to see her hip flask was still in there. She shook it, happy to see it was mostly full.
"Nothing like hair of the dog to cure a hangover" She murmured under her breath, taking a swig. She knew her father would smell the alcohol on her, but if your family can't accept you, then who can? She'd take the bus to her Daddy's.
She stepped out into the rain, not bothering with the umbrella. The bus stop was just over the road, luckily, and she sprinted over to it, only getting slightly damp.
She checked the timetable, and sat down, smiling at the stranger next to her. He looked sort of familiar, but in a very vague kind of way.
"I'm sorry, this is weird but... do I know you? I just feel like I do..." She tailed off, feeling stupid and ducking her head.
